When an author talks about "writing smut", do they mean "smut" as an affectionate term? Or is it more like, "smut sells, so I'm writing smut"? Sometimes it sounds derogatory, but I don't know if it's because I'm reading between the lines...

If you're writing erotic fiction or erotic romance, why not SAY you're writing erotic fiction or erotic romance? Why say "smut" instead? (And I saw it on Facebook, so the "Twitter only allows a certain number of characters in a post" excuse doesn't fly.)

For those of you playing at home...

I mean, if you're writing something specifically because you know it sells, that's fine. But at least have the decency to show the genre - and its fans - some respect.
